The title page of the first volume is typical,

Washington : published by Gales and Seaton, 1832.

The time period, and the editors, varied as the series progressed. In all, there are 38 folio volumes, published in 1832-34 and 1858-61, containing 6,278 numbered documents from 1789 to 1838, arranged in volumes by subject matter, and chronologically within each volume. Each volume has a table of contents (excepting Indian Affairs, vol. 1) and an index. The numbered documents may contain multiple parts over several years, and range from one paragraph to hundreds of pages.

The longest document we have noticed is in Finance vol. 4, No. 705, p. 495-1077, for 583 p. This is without a complete search.
The page size is 13" × 8", while the text area is 11" × 6", each with small variations.

There are three sequences of volume numbers - the modern collation, assigned long after fully completing all 38 volumes; within each Class, on the half-title page, as published; the contemporary collation, on the title page (some volumes simply say "volume ").

The publisher was Gales and Seaton (GS), but five volumes were also published by Duff Green in 1834 (DG), with some differences in content.

About the compilers and further details, see the Checklist of United States Public Documents, 1789-1909, pub. 1911, p. 3-4 (link). In particular, the dates on the title pages do not correspond to the dates of the documents in the volumes (which we have copied into the table below).

The discussion in the House, 24-25 Feb. 1829, under the heading Reprinting of Public Documents, is both illuminating and depressing (link). This discussion was continued, and no better, as Reprinting Old Documents, 26 Feb. 1831 (link). Publication was authorized by the Act of 2 Mar. 1831, 4 Stat. 471.
