  • The letter-carriers office in 1788 is described in the Tenth Report on Fees and Emoluments, p. 776 (link).
  • In 1797, Hugh Ferguson was Inspector of Letter Carriers, and John Sparke was his deputy (link, link, link, link, link).  So, it is likely that they were responsible for the final production of the List.  The profits from the "Letter Carrier's Walk" went entirely to Ferguson (link, link, link); profits were still accruing in 1827, at that time paid to J. Lawrence, Assistant Inspector of Letter Carriers.
  • At the time, there were three sets of letter-carriers, for the Inland-letter Office, the Foreign-letter Office, and the Twopenny Post-office, each with its own Inspector of Letter-Carriers; Ferguson and Sparke were with the Inland-letter Office.
Goss observes, "Contrary to what merchants and traders may have anticipated from the fact that the volume was prepared by postal officials, and issued under the patronage of the Postmaster-General, this semi-official publication contained nothing that was new, nor in any one particular did it display an improvement on its predecessors."  The missing features, already introduced by others, were a Trades directory (essentially, the name-occupation-address list sorted or classified by occupation), and a Street directory (the name-occupation-address list sorted by address).  These were eventually added, along with many other desirable features.

The Post Office London and Suburban Court Guide, London : Kelly & Co.
Published 1861, 1866, 1867, 1868.  (Shaw 870).
Kelly's was protective of their copyrights.  The single-sheet Post-Office Almanack for the year 1840, London : H. Hooper, 1839, was pirated from Kelly; see The Monthly Law Magazine, link; The Jurist, link; Cases in Chancery, link; The English Reports, link.  Further cases are described in the Post Office Directory of Lincolnshire, 1861, link (p. 3).

The competitive spirit reached a peak of sorts in the preface to the 1850 Birmingham volume, link, p. ii.

For a complaint lodged against Critchett and Woods by a competitor, see Kent's Original London Directory for 1823, London : Henry-Kent Causton, 91st ed., "To The Public", pp. iii-xvi, link.  Rates of Postage, pp. xxi-xxxix, link.
There is relatively little information about the national-level Post Office in some of the county-level directories, but they are invaluable for resolving questions concerning local postal services.
Many of the directory sections were also available separately, and the pagination was arranged so they could be combined in various ways.  Some libraries have disbound the combined volumes into separate county volumes.
